I can vouch for the fact that life is never dull when you’re a golden retriever dog parent. I love every moment of sharing my life with them. Golden Retrievers have a special way of turning the most ordinary moments into something heartwarming and hilarious too. If you are a fellow Golden parent or had a joyful experience raising one, you’ll recognize these 9 typical traits that make Golden Retrievers unforgettable furry companions.
Here’s what living with a Golden Retriever truly means; one trait at a time.
9 Typical Traits Of A Golden Retriever
1. Champion Cuddler
If my Golden Retrievers have a job title, it would be ‘Chief Cuddle Officer’ – especially if you have male Goldens. From my experience owning both male and female Goldens, the males are definitely the cuddlers.
No matter the time of day, Goldens are always ready to snuggle – head on my lap, paw on my arm, eyes gleaming with love. Sometimes I wonder if my Golden realizes just how close he is. Seriously… 70+ pounds of Golden Love – there’s no weighted blanket on earth that can compete.
FYI: KB and Kenzo each have their own cuddle times. They know how to take turns, but sometimes they want cuddles together – and yes, it’s possible!
2. Golden Floof
Our house? It’s a glittery wonderland — of Golden fur. Yes, the iconic Golden coat is gorgeous but it’s everywhere – on the couch, in the car, even in my coffee cup (no kidding).
With all of these Golden glitters, I accept the “fluff” as part of my daily life — it’s so worthwhile1
3. Fetch Enthusiast
You’re not really playing fetch until it’s with a Golden Retriever. They love chasing down balls. My Goldens’ tails whip faster with each throw, and somehow, I’m always the first to get tired.
Golden Retrievers also enjoy retrieving, holding other objects, and carrying things in their mouths.
4. Velcro Buddy
Forget privacy — Golden parents know it’s a relic of the past. Bathroom break? They’re right there. Cooking dinner? Expect supawvision. My two Goldens shadow me like they are an undercover agent protecting me from the kitchen trash bin. It’s not clingy — it’s Golden loyalty at its best. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
5. Puddle Pro
If there’s water within 100 feet, my Goldens will locate it — and be in it. Puddles, ponds (Oh My), or sprinklers— they will be diving in as if it’s a pool pawty and it’s all worth it. I think Goldens seriously thinks every walk should conclude with a splash.
6. Sunshine Snoot
Every day I open my eyes to a Golden sweet, smiling snoot a mere few inches from my face. Golden nose taps me softly and those big eyes say, “It’s a new day — let’s love it.” That Golden Snoot definitely shines with light and my daily dose of serotonin.
7. Derp Master Grin
No one on earth can be as goofy as a Golden Retriever. That half-grin, tongue hanging out, eyes wide with excitement – it’s all pure gold. My Golden’s derpy smile has comforted me on my toughest days – and definitely makes me laugh too. One lesson my Golden Retrievers have taught me is that “Laughter is always just a tail wag away.
8. Snack Sniffer Extraordinaire
The Golden Nose knows … they know when you open a treat bag or take the cheese out of the fridge. My Goldens somehow appear out of nowhere, tail wagging and wide eyes locked on the snack like a laser.
Goldens are connoisseurs of snacks and will never say no to a snack.
9. Tail-Wagging Machine
That Golden Tail? It has a mind of its own. It wags when we talk, when we stare, and when we play. Sometimes, even in their sleep, it wags – fur sure dreaming about a game of fetch. The Golden tail is a joy meter, and its happiness is contagious. A wagging tail straight to my heart.
